Answer: Rainfall is a form of precipitation which leads to the atmospheric instability, but it is not evenly distributed throughout the Earth.

Factors that influences Spatial Variation

  • Latitude: due to unequal distribution of insolation rainfall decreases from equator to Poleward.
  • Continentality: coastal areas receive more rainfall than interior
  • Presence of Mountain/Slope: it leads to orographic rainfall towards the windward side while leeward side receives no rainfall. Example Andes (South America), Rockies (North America), Western Ghat (India) so on
  • Prevailing Wind Direction: as 35º-40º North-South receives more rainfall over eastern coast while 45º-65º North-South gets heavier rainfall on western coast
