Answer: Illegal sand mining is a perennial problem in India. No one knows for sure how much sand is illegally mined around the world, much less in India. However, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) calls it ‘largest extractive industry on the planet’, with up to 50 billion tonnes of sand and gravel being mined each year.
