With the decline of Mughal Empire after the death of Aurangzeb, Bengal became an independent viceroyality for all practice purposes under Murshid Quli Khan.
- Murshid justified the confidence reposed in him by the efficient management, which raised Bengal to the highest degree of prosperity. A few months before his accession to the throne, Farrukhsiyar made an attempt to replace Murshid. But, it proved futile as Murshid repulsed the troops sent against him and slew the commander Rashid Khan (May 1712).
