Response of Nationalists to British Participation in War

During World War I (1914–19), Britain sided with France, Russia, the United States, Italy, and Japan against Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Turkey. In the second half of the 19th century, the world's industrialized capitalist countries began to compete for, and struggle for, exclusive markets and colonies.

  • The impact of First World War and with Gandhian ideologies, the national movement entered its third and final phase in 1919, marking the beginning of popular mass movements.
  • People from different strata, like farmers, tribals, students, and women, joined in large numbers, and sometimes even factory workers got involved.
