​Characteristic Features of the Administration of East India Company

  • Commercial in Nature: Basically government by Council, which had executive and legislative powers with the Governor or the Governor-General having the casting vote.
  • A Government by Boards: There was the Board of trade, Military Board, Revenue Board, Railway Board, etc. The questions of policy and principle, conduct and action were settled in the Board.
  • A Government by Record: When transactions were commercial, records were brief and manageable. But political dealings made record-keeping cumbersome and voluminous. With the Company headquarters in far-away England, record keeping helped check absolutism and uncontrolled power.
