Government of India Act, 1858

The outbreak of 1857 Sepoy Mutiny, as the first war of Independence was a shock to the British Government. Economic exploitation, social deprivation, and political unrest made 1857 outburst inevitable.

  • The British rulers had to revise their policy of conquest and annexation and adopt a cautious and calculated policy of association and cooperation. The Act of 1858 introduced various changes. It assured the native princes of their rights, dignity, and honor.
