First Round Table Conference (Nov 1930 – Jan 1931)

Before the Simon Commission submitted its report in May 1930, the Labour Party headed by MacDonald came to power in England in 1929.

  • Lord Irwin's declaration of October 1929 disclosed the Labour Government's intentions to draw a new Constitution after consulting Indian leaders.
  • The three Round Table Conferences of Indian leaders and spokesmen of the British government were held in London from 1930 to 1932. The INC participated only in the second conference.
  • In 1930, the British Government summoned the first Round Table Conference in London, bringing together Indian leaders and representatives of the British Government to discuss the Simon Commission Report.
