Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill, 2024
On 12th December 2024, the Lok Sabha passed the Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which seeks to amend the existing Disaster Management Act, 2005.
- The Bill, first introduced on 1st August 2024, proposes key changes to enhance disaster management systems in India.
Salient Features
Preparation of Disaster Management Plans
- The Bill shifts responsibility for preparing national and state disaster management plans directly to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and State Disaster Management Authorities (SDMA).
Expand Functions of NDMA and SDMA
The Bill expands the functions of NDMA and SDMA, including:
- Reviewing disaster management plans of government departments.
