The Coastal Shipping Bill, 2024
On 2nd December 2024, the Coastal Shipping Bill, 2024, was introduced in the Lok Sabha.
- The Bill aims to enhance coastal trade and promote Indian-flagged vessels owned and operated by Indian citizens.
Salient Features
- Licensing for Coastal Trade: The Bill prohibits foreign vessels from trading in coastal waters without a licence, with provisions for inland vessels to participate under specified conditions.
- Repeal of Part XIV of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958: It seeks to repeal Part XIV of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958, which currently regulates ships in coastal trade. The new Bill expands regulation to cover all types of vessels, including ....
