Centre Withdraws the Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2025
On 22nd February 2025, the Union Law Ministry announced that it would introduce a new draft Bill to amend the Advocates Act, 1961 after receiving public feedback on the existing draft Bill which was made available for public consultation on February 13, 2025.
- The Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2025, aimed to redefine legal practitioners and law graduates, but faced opposition from the legal fraternity.
What were the proposed changes?
- Expanded Definition of Legal Practitioner: The Bill sought to broaden the term "legal practitioner" to include corporate lawyers, in-house counsels, and legal professionals in various organisations, beyond those practising in courts.
