Nepal-India-Bangladesh Electricity Trade Agreement
On 3rd October 2024, Nepal, India and Bangladesh officially signed a tripartite agreement aimed at facilitating cross-border electricity trade, a long-awaited development in regional energy cooperation.
- The agreement allows Nepal to export its surplus electricity to Bangladesh through India during the rainy season, specifically from 15th June 15 to 15th November each year.
- Nepal will utilize India's transmission infrastructure to send electricity across its territory to Bangladesh, creating a streamlined process for energy distribution.
- In the initial phase of the agreement, Nepal will export 40 megawatts of hydroelectricity to Bangladesh via the Dhalkebar-Muzaffarpur 400 kV transmission line.
