First National Party from North-East

  • The National People’s Party (NPP) was recently declared as a national party by the Election Commission of India making it the first from the northeastern region to earn this status.
  • The NPP is recognised as a State party in Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya and Nagaland.
  • It became the 8th national political party in the country. The other seven are Indian National Congress, Bhartiya Janta Party, Bahujan Samaj Party, Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), National Congress Party, All India Trinamool Congress.
  • Election Commission recognises a party as national party if it fulfils at least one of the following qualifications:
