National Mission on Quantum Technologies & Applications

  • In line with the aim of achieving excellence in the quantum frontier, Department of Science and Technology launched National Mission on Quantum Technologies and Applications (NM-QTA) in Budget 2020-21. It has an outlay of Rs 8000 crore for 5 years.
  • The areas of focus would both be in fundamental science and towards developing technology platforms in the four identified verticals viz.
    • Quantum Computing & Simulations;
    • Quantum Materials & Devices;
    • Quantum Communications; &
    • Quantum Sensor & Metrology.
  • Quantum Technology: It refers to a class of technologies that works by utilizing the principles of quantum mechanics, i.e. physics of sub-atomic particles, including quantum entanglement and quantum superposition.
