Land Revenue Policies of British
Permanent Settlement
- Introduced by Lord Cornwallis (in 1793) in Bengal, Bihar and Orissa.
- In this system, Zamindars who were earlier revenue collectors were declared as owners of land in order to create private ownership in land so that Indian agriculture could move along capitalistic lines. Hence, the system was also called Zamindari System.
- Drawback: Nearly half of zamindari lands were put on sale. Also, it paved way towards Absentee landlordism as zamindars used to transfer lands.
Ryotwari Settlement
- Introduced by Thomas Munro and Alexander Reed (in 1820) in Madras, Bombay and parts of Assam.
