Gandhi’s Struggle in South Africa
- He was the son of a Dewan (Minister) of an Indian state whose family, though in straitened economic circumstances, was widely respected in his native Kathiawad.
- He had spent three years in London studying for the Bar.
- In 1893, he was a twenty-four year old barrister, who landed at Durban on a one-year contract to sort out the legal problems of Dada Abdullah, a Gujarati merchant.
- He was the first Indian barrister, the first highly-educated Indian, to have come to South Africa.
- His experience of racial discrimination and the plea of Indian immigrants made him take the mantle of protest against the unjust colonial ....
