Jaipur Awarded UNESCO World Heritage Sites Status
- Jaipur was awarded UNESCO world heritage status as a Cultural Site in 2019, taking India’s tally to 38.
- The fortified city of Jaipur was founded in 1727 by Sawai Raja Jai Singh II.
- Unlike other cities in the region located in hilly terrain, it was established on the plain and built according to a grid plan interpreted in the light of Vedic architecture.
- Significance: Since these sites are judged to be important for the collective and preservative interests of humanity they are legally protected by international treaties.
