Konkan Geoglyphs Notified as ‘Protected Monuments’
On 11th August, 2024, the Maharashtra government declared the geoglyphs in Ratnagiri as ‘protected monuments’ under the Maharashtra Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1960.
Ratnagiri’s Geoglyphs
- Ratnagiri district has more than 1,500 pieces of such art, also called “Katal shilpa,” spread across 70 sites.
- The intricate designs offer a peek into early human life and the ancient ecosystem through their anthropomorphic and zoomorphic depictions.
- According to carbon dating, these sites are believed to be over 12,000 –20,000 years old.
- The sites are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
