The Citizens' Commission on Elections just released its report on EVMs and VVPAT.

Legal Aspect

In 1988, a new Section 61A was inserted in the Representation of the People Act, 1951 empowering Election Commission of India (ECI) to use electronic voting machines.

About EVM

  • EVM is a microcontroller-based portable instrument designed to modernise the election procedure of conducting elections.
  • EVM consists of two Units – a Control Unit and a Balloting Unit. These units are joined together by a cable.
  • BEL and ECIL in collaboration with Election Commission of India (ECI) are responsible for assembling EVMs.
