Launch of Voluntary Carbon Market Framework in the Agriculture Sector
On 29th January, 2024, the Union government launched a framework to promote voluntary carbon markets in agriculture, aiming to benefit farmers and encourage environmentally friendly practices.
Need for the Framework
- India's farm sector accounts for 14% of the country's total greenhouse gas emissions, ranking behind electricity (44%) and manufacturing industries and construction sectors combined (18%).
- Livestock, constituting 78% of India's total methane emissions, plays a substantial role, with 535.78 million livestock in the country.
- The largest emissions within agriculture stem from livestock farming and continuously irrigated, deep-water paddy cultivation, particularly in West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, and Bihar.
