Official Language

"Official language" refers to the language used by a government for example court, legislature, and/or administration.

Constitutional Provisions

  • Part XVII of the Indian Constitution deals with the official languages in Articles 343 to 351.
  • Article 343 of the Indian Constitution states that the official language of the Union shall be Hindi in Devanagari script.
  • According to Article 345, the legislature of a state may adopt any one or more of the state's official languages, including Hindi, like the language or languages to be used for all or some of the state's official purposes.
