Cooperative Federalism

Cooperative federalism is defined as a flexible relationship between the federal and state governments in which both work together on a variety of issues and programs.

Constitutional Provisions

  • Article 1 of the Constitution states, “India, that is Bharat, shall be a Union of States”. While the Constitution doesn’t mention the term “federal”, it does provide for a governance structure primarily federal in nature.
  • Article 245 vests legislative power in the Parliament to make laws for the country and states legislatures to make laws for their respective states.
