Under representation of Women in Judiciary

  • Attorney General of India recently stressed on the need to improve the representation of women in the judiciary.
  • The apathy in dealing with women-specific crimes in absence of women adjudicator was highlighted recently when Madhya Pradesh High Court granted bail to a man accused of sexual harassment on the condition that he will request the complainant to tie a 'rakhi' on him.

Present Strength of Women in Judiciary

  • Supreme Court
    • Supreme Court has only 2 women judges, as against a total sanctioned strength of 34 judges and there has never been a female Chief Justice of India.
