India State of Forest Report 2023: Gains and Concerns
On 21st December 2024, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change released the 'India State of Forest Report 2023’ (ISFR 2023) at the Forest Research Institute in Dehradun (Uttarakhand).
- The ISFR, published biennially by the Forest Survey of India (FSI) provides crucial insights into the country’s forest cover.
India's Forest Cover Status
- Overall Green Cover: India’s green cover has surpassed the 25% threshold, with a total of 827,357 sq km (25.17%) under forest and tree cover.
- Net Forest Cover Increase: Between 2021 and 2023, the net forest cover increased by 156.41 sq km, a modest rise of 0.05%.
