Reforming India’s Criminal Justice System - By Dr. Amarjeet Bhargava
In the context of India’s criminal justice system, the need to move towards reform-oriented measures has long been felt. It is expected that the new laws will boost contemporary relevance at the policy level and help bring the much needed positive changes.
On 25th December, 2023, President Droupadi Murmu gave assent to three new criminal justice bills recently passed by the Parliament.
These three new laws include the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023; Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023; and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023.
These laws will replace the colonial-era Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872.
