Why in news?
- The state government of Uttar Pradesh has recently come out with measures to promote and popularize Tharu tribe and its culture.
Tharu Tribe and Tharu Culture
- The community belongs to the Terai regions among the Shivalikas or the lower Himalayas. Most of them are forest dwellers, and some do agriculture.
- The word Tharu is believed to have originated from Theravada, meaning followers of Theravada Buddhism.
- Thars live in both India and Nepal. In the Indian Terai, they live mostly in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
- According to the 2011 census, the Scheduled Tribes population in Uttar Pradesh ....
