Causes/Factors
- Religious Causes: Orthodoxy ruled Indian faiths and culture in the 18th and 19th centuries. There were several castes and sub-castes in Indian society. Missionaries from the Christian and Muslim faiths started persuading people to practise their respective faiths as a result of this circumstance.
- Spread of Western Education: Western education in India spread during the British occupation. Indians were given the chance to learn the ideas of western philosophers and intellectuals.
- Propagation of Christianity: Christianity was spread by Christian missionaries who were very active in raising awareness and eradicating social and religious injustices in India.
