- Since the Green Revolution (mid-1960s), India's food grain production increased from 72.35 million tonnes (1965-66) to 332.30 million tonnes (2023-24).
- Non-food grain production, including horticulture, sugarcane, and cotton, has also seen significant growth.
- Irrigation coverage expanded from 19% in 1960-61 to 56% in 2022-23, with growing dependence on groundwater.
- Groundwater use in irrigation rose from 30% to 63%, supported by electricity subsidies, increasing extraction.
- The number of groundwater extracting devices (GEDs) surged from 0.6 million (1982-83) to 21.9 million (2017-19).
