India and Bangladesh reopen Haldibari-Chilahati Rail Link
On 1st August, 2021, Bangladesh and India resumed regular operation of freight trains through the restored Haldibari-Chilahati rail route after over 50 years.
- The restored rail link was inaugurated by the Indian Prime Minister and his Bangladesh counterpart in December 17, 2020.
- Haldibari is located in the Cooch Behar district of West Bengal and Chilahati is a border railway station in Bangladesh.
- Haldibari-Chilahati rail link between India and Bangladesh (the then East Pakistan) was operational till 1965. The war of 1965 cut off all railway links between India and the then East Pakistan.
