Covaxin: Indigenous Vaccine for COVID-19
Covaxin is India's first vaccine candidate to have gone into human clinical trials. It is developed by Bharat Biotech and has been approved by the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) for phase I and II human clinical trials.
- The SARS-CoV-2 strain was isolated in National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune and transferred to Bharat Biotech. They developed Covaxin as an “inactivated” vaccine — one made by using particles of the Covid-19 virus that were killed, making them unable to infect or replicate.
