Hampi World Heritage Site: Flooded in Karnataka Rains

Recently, most of the monuments at the World Heritage Site of Hampi were flooded with the release of water from Tungabhadra reservoir in Karnataka.

  • The grandiose site of Hampi comprises mainly of the remnants of the Capital City ofVijayanagara Empire (14th-16th Cent CE), located in the Tungabhadra basin in Bellary District.
  • Some of the notable structures at Hampi are:
  1. Virupaksha Temple (Pampavathi Temple): Dedicated to Lord Virupaksha, the patron diety of the Vijaynagara empire.
  2. Vitthla temple complex: Dedicated to Lord Vitthala, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and consists of pillared halls and the colossal stone chariot.
