- Kovalam beach in Chennai and Eden beach in Puducherry have recently been awarded the Blue Flag certification.
- ‘Blue Flag’ is an internationally recognized eco-label awarded to beaches, marinas and sustainable boating tourism operators.
- It is awarded by the Denmark-based non-profit Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).
- The Blue Flag programme was started in France in 1985 and in areas out of Europe in 2001.
