Telecom Industry Revival Package

On 15^th September, 2021, the Union Cabinet approved a relief package which included 9 structural and 5 procedural reforms to strengthen the cash–strapped telecom sector.

The relief measures came into effect from 1^st October, 2021.

Need

• Telecom Operators Vodafone Idea Ltd (VIL) and Bharti Airtel are reeling under unsustainable financial duress as these have to repay the biggest chunk of AGR dues.
• In September 2020, the Supreme Court passed a ruling asking both the telcos to pay 10 percent of the total AGR dues by March 31, 2020, following which they can make payments in annual installments between 2021 and 2031.
