Supreme Court calls for Death Penalty as an Exception
Why in News?
- On 5th March 2019, Supreme Court ordered the release of 6 innocent men who were held guilty of heinous crime and were locked in Yervada jail for 16 years awaiting death sentence (Ankush Maruti Shinde v. State of Maharashtra case).
- In another case an appeal was filed by a man sentenced to death for the rape and murder of a five-year-old in Madhya Pradesh.
- In a recent judgment, the Supreme Court held that the death sentence must be imposed only when life imprisonment appears to be an altogether inappropriate punishment, having regard to the relevant facts and circumstances ....
