Why in News?
- Attorney general of India recently requested invocation of Official secrets act against The Hindu for using the “secret documents” related to Rafael Deal in breach of the OSA.
Historical Background of OSA
- The first Indian official secrets act was enacted in 1889 to muzzle the voice of nationalist publications, which were opposing the British Government’s policy on daily basis and generating a political consciousness amongst the masses.
- Subsequently it was amended during the time of Lord Curzon ( 1899-1904) in 1904 and made more stringent.
- Finally 1904 act was replaced by The Indian official secrets act of 1923 ....
