Groundbreaking Malaria Vaccine under Test
Why in news?
- The World Health Organisation welcomed a pilot project in Malawi of administering a malaria vaccine to children below the age of 2 years. A total 3,60,000 children across three African countries — Malawi, Ghana and Kenya — will be covered every year with the vaccine.
What is the RTS, S (Mosquirix) vaccine?
- RTS, S/AS01 (trade name Mosquirix) is a recombinant protein-based malaria vaccine.
- A pilot project for vaccination has been launched on April 23, 2019 in Malawi. Ghana and Kenya are to join the program later this year.
- The vaccine has been developed by GSK (GlaxoSmithKline ) ....
