Puthandu: Tamil New Year

  • Tamil New Year is also known as Varusha pirappu and is observed on first day of Tamil month Chithirai.
  • The auspicious occasion of Puthandu is also popularly known as Varusha Pirappu or the birth of New Year and falls on 13th or 14th April according to the Gregorian calendar.
  • It is believed that Lord Brahma, the supreme creator, began creation on this day.
