Recently, the Vice President elaborated on the importance of strong foundational skills in native languages in the initial years of informal learning at home.
Constitution on Native Languages
- 8th Schedule of the Constitution: It lists the official languages of the country. Initially, there were 14 languages listed in the schedule, it now has 22. A majority of Indians speak the languages listed. While this Schedule recognizes that India is a multilingual country, there are still 1,300 ‘mother tongues’ that have been left out.
