SC Orders Centre and States to Provide Transport, Food and Shelter to Migrants

A three-judge Bench of the Supreme Court on May 26 stated that there have been inadequacies and certain lapses on the part of the Central and State governments in dealing with the migrant workers crisis during the lockdown.

• The court took suo motu cognisance of media reports on helpless migrants forced to travel thousands of miles on foot or bicycles during the lockdown and representations from senior lawyers to step in to protect the fundamental rights of the migrant workers.
• In another May 28th order, Supreme Court noting several lapses, ordered government to not charge travel fare from migrant workers.
