Office of CJI Comes Under the Purview of RTI Act

On 13th November 2019, the five-member Constitution bench of Supreme Court (SC) held that office of the Chief Justice of India is a public authority under the Right to Information Act.

Supreme Court Judgement

  • In its unanimous verdict on 13th November 2019, the SC stated that transparency does not undermine judicial independence while upholding the Delhi High Court judgment which ruled that office of the Chief Justice is a public authority under sections 2(h) of the RTI Act 2005.
