Avian Botulism Kills Migratory Birds in Sambhar Salt Water Lake

Over 18,500 birds were found dead recently at the Sambhar Lake in Rajasthan, which is known for migratory birds. A report of Indian Veterinary Research Institute of Bareilly confirmed avian botulism as the cause of the death of domestic and migratory birds in the Sambhar Lake.

Cause of Death

  • Avian botulism, a paralytic and frequently fatal disease is caused by the ingestion of toxins.
  • Heavy monsoon and a delay in removing dead birds are the main factors which led to propagation of bacteria which killed over 18,500 birds in Sambhar Lake.
