A Breakthrough Against Antimicrobial Resistance
In a path-breaking discovery, a team of scientists from Institute for Stem Cell Science and Regenerative Medicine (inStem) and Unilever recently demonstrated a way to stimulate skin cells to secrete Antimicrobial Peptides (AMPs) – molecules produced by cells - which can target and kill pathogens in a variety of ways such that the pathogens hardly become resistant. This makes AMPs uniquely suited to treat antibiotic-resistant microbes, including superbugs.
