India Gains Significant Forest Area
- India gained 266,000 hectares of forest area annually from 2010 to 2020, ranking third globally in forest area gain, following China and Australia, according to the latest Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA) by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).
- The top countries for forest area gain included China (1,937,000 hectares), Australia (446,000 hectares), and India.
- Others in the top 10 were Chile, Vietnam, Turkey, the United States, France, Italy, and Romania.
- The FAO commended India for its innovative approaches in restoring degraded lands and expanding agroforestry, highlighting a new national policy to support these efforts.
