Analyse the significance of Witness Protection Scheme in the wake of rising attacks on Witnesses in India.

Answer: Recently, there has been an increase in attacks on witnesses like Asaram Bapu case, Unnao Rape Case which has made it imperative to have a Witness Protection Scheme in place. In December 2018, Supreme Court provided the legal sanctity to the draft Witness Protection Scheme until Parliament/state legislature enacts a law on the matter.

  • Justice:To ensure free and fair trial without intimidation of the witnesses. It will also help in strengthening the Criminal Justice System and improve national security scenario.
