He was one of the prominent Indian classical vocalists. He was associated with Mewati gharana.
- He was awarded Padma Vibhushan in 2000, Padma Shri in 1975 (India’s fourth-highest civilian award), Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1987, and the Padma Bhushan in 1999.
