WMO’s Greenhouse Gas Bulletin 2023
On October 28, 2024, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) released its annual Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Bulletin for the year 2023.
Key Findings
- Record GHG Concentrations: Annual Increase (2022-2023) by2.3 ppm, marking the 12thconsecutive year of increases over 2 ppm.
- CO2 Levels: Reached 420 ppm, similar to levels seen 3-5 million years ago, when:
- Global temperatures were 2-3°C higher.
- Sea levels were 10-20 meters higher.
- Methane: Largest three-year increase (2020-2022) recorded.
- Linked to natural wetland emissions under La Niña conditions.
