Annual Ground Water Quality Report
The Ministry of Jal Shakti, in January 2025, released an Annual Ground Water Quality Report for the entire country for the year 2024.
As per the report, India is the largest user of groundwater globally, with 87% of extracted groundwater used in agriculture and 11% for domestic purposes.
Findings
- Total annual groundwater recharge increased by 15 BCM in 2024, while extraction declined by 3 BCM compared to 2017.
- Most states fall under the "Safe" category (<70% extraction), but Punjab, Rajasthan, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu, Haryana, and Delhi remain over-exploited (>100%).
