Urban Water Crisis
In March 2024, Bengaluru experienced one of its worst water crises in recent years due to poor rainfall and unsustainable water management, reflecting a broader urban water scarcity issue.
Key Concerns
- ‘Day Zero’ scenario, similar to Cape Town (2018) and Chennai (2019), where reservoirs reached critically low levels.
- Threat to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation by 2030.
- Unplanned urbanization has reduced lakes from 262 (1961) to 81 (2024).
- Pollution from industrial waste & sewage has degraded water sources like Bellandur Lake.
- Over-extraction of groundwater, inefficient water supply, and high leakage losses worsen the situation.
