Review of State Other Backward Classes (OBCs) Lists
In May 2024, the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) started reviewing state OBC lists under the 102nd Constitutional Amendment Act, 2018, to prevent ineligible inclusions and ensure compliance with the 50% reservation cap.
Key Developments
- NCBC flagged ineligible communities in the Karnataka and West Bengal OBC lists.
- West Bengal’s request for new OBC additions to the Central List was stalled, pending justification.
- Reviews planned for Kerala, Odisha, Bihar, Maharashtra, and others.
OBC Classification & Reservations
- Dual OBC Lists:
- Central List: Defined under Article 342A (1), modifications require Parliament’s approval.
