In March 2024, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) celebrated 50 years of KVKs, recognizing their critical role in agricultural extension and farmer education.

About KVKs

  • District-level institutions under the National Agricultural Research System (NARS).
  • Bridge research and extension to improve agricultural productivity.
  • 731 KVKs operate under 11 Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute (ATARI) zones.
  • First KVK (1974) in Puducherry, proposed by the Mohan Singh Mehta Committee (1973).
  • 100% centrally funded, functioning under State Agricultural Universities, ICAR institutes, & other organizations.

Functions of KVKs

  • On-farm testing and frontline demonstrations.
  • Farmer training & advisory services.
  • Seed production & technology dissemination.
