Kasampatty Sacred Grove Declared as Biodiversity Heritage Site
On 27th March 2025, the Tamil Nadu government notified Kasampatty (Veera Kovil) Sacred Grove in Dindigul district as a Biodiversity Heritage Site (BHS) under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, marking the state’s second such designation after Arittapatti.
- Spanning 4.97 hectares, the grove is home to 48 plant species, 22 shrubs, 21 lianas, 29 herbs, and over 12 species of birds, small mammals, reptiles, and insects.
- The site houses the Veera Kovil Temple, where locals worship the deity ‘Veeranan’, blending conservation with deep-rooted cultural traditions.
